Local Sledding Hills & Outdoor Ice Rinks

Michigan winters offer families and kids of all ages a chance to bundle up and head outside for some fun on the snow and ice.  So, grab your sleds or skates and a big thermos filled with hot chocolate and make some lasting wintery memories!

Want to feel the sting of cold on your face as your sled speeds down a snowy hill? Here are some of the best local sledding hills that will have you racing your kids to the bottom.

Lost Lake Nature Park Sledding Hill
846 Lost Lake Trail, Oakland MI, 48363
Call: 248-651-4440 ext 299 to confirm sled hill is open as there must be 2" of packed snow on frozen ground for the hill to be open.
Hours: 10am - 5pm daily (conditions permitting) Fri & Sat open until 9pm
Warming Shelter: Friday nights, 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays 10am to 9pm, Sundays 10am to 5pm
***Teen Night February 14th from 5-8pm ~ Free pizza & Hot Chocolate until supplies last

Lost Lake is by far one of the best sledding hills in Oakland County with its smooth and well kept hill.  The sledding fun isn't limited to daylight hours thanks to tree top lamp towers.  Additional features include a warming shelter, safe walkway up the hill, seating & picnic tables and a separate sled hill for smaller children will have you wishing for another snow day!

Be sure to follow the sled hill rules to make it a fun and safe experience for all.

Jesse Decker Park Sled Hill
Located on the southeast corner of Orion Township on Squirrel Road south of Silverbell Road

You will be able to gain some speed at the sledding hill at Jesse Decker Park! This sled hill is located by the baseball fields and becomes quite busy when there is enough snow on the ground. 

Bloomer Park Sledding Hill

Hours: 8am to dusk, Thursday - Sunday 

Bloomer Park offers a large sledding/tobogganing hill with 3 runs and walkways between each hill. The hill is steep enough for those looking for speed, but safe for younger children as well. When the park is open for sledding, there will be a park attendant at the entrance to collect the $5 admission fee.

Seymour Lake Park "Red Flyer Run" Sled Hill

Hours: 8am - 10pm year round

The red flyer run hill is a nice mid-sized sled hill that is great for younger children but the older kids can still get some speed.  It is located towards the back of the park near the splash pad and very close to the bathrooms and parking lot. Nighttime sledding can be enjoyed courtesy of the light towers at the top of the sled hill. 

Brandon Township Community Park Sled Hill
1414 N. Hadley Road, Brandon Twp.
Call: 248-627-4640 to confirm the hill is open and lift is operating.
Hours: 8:30am - 6:00pm

Brandon Park's sled hill features a motorized lift station which operates on non-holiday Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 4pm.  This unique feature allows more passes down the hill as you won't waste so much energy trudging back up! This is a great and well kept sled hill that you may reserve for $30/hour and electricity is available in the nearby pavilion.  


If you're more in the mood to skate across some ice there are some excellent local outdoor skating rinks to try out. As always, conditions must be deemed safe in order for the rinks to be open. 


Ice Rink at Marsh View Park
3100 Clarkston Rd, Oakland Twp, MI

Hours: 10am - 5pm daily (conditions permitting)

Marsh View Park's ice skating rink is located near the park's parking lot.  This well maintained rink is unsupervised and ice skate rentals are not available.  Hockey is prohibited.

Bay Court Park Ice Rink 
6970 Andersonville Rd., Clarkston, MI

Hours: 8am - 5pm Fri & Sat nights until 9pm

Bay Court Park features a 50x80 foot ice rink that is very well maintained and family friendly.  Heated bathrooms and lamp towers are a few extras that will make your skate more enjoyable.  Hockey is not permitted and you must bring your own skates.  This rink is staffed and monitored to ensure the surface is clear and skatable.  Attendance to the park and rink are free!

Independence Oaks County Park Ice Skating
9501 Sashabaw Rd, Clarkston, MI

Hours: 8am - half and hour before sunset daily (conditions permitting)

When Crooked Lake freezes over, park staff keep it smooth and clear for skaters to hit the ice.  No hockey is permitted and you must provide your own skates.  When you are ready for a break or on your way out be sure to hit the warming house for some hot chocolate.

Downtown Auburn Hills Skating Rink
Located at the intersection of Auburn Rd. & Squirrel Rd 
Hours: 8am - 10pm daily (conditions permitting)

This rink has been an Auburn Hills fixture since it's debut in the winter of 2011. Outdoor lights and a well maintained surface ensure that everyone will enjoy their turn across the frozen surface.  Hockey is not permitted and you must provide your own skates.

Ice Skating at Spencer Park

Spencer Park offers outdoor skating on Carter Lake in two separate areas for hockey or ice skating. There is a heated shelter and nearby restrooms to make your experience that more enjoyable. Paid admission to Spencer Park is required to gain entry ($5 residents & $10 non-residents). Please note that the park will not be open in the winter until conditions are suitable for ice skating.

Ice Skating at Municipal Park
400 Sixth St., Rochester (back of Ludlow Street)

When the pond freezes over in Municipal Park, guests can enjoy open skating as long as the conditions are safe.
