“The Build & Test area is one of my favorite zones at LEGOLAND® Discovery Center” said Clint P., the Discovery Center’s Master Model Builder. “When I was
younger, my brother and I used to build cars of all shapes and sizes and race them down the bumpy driveway. Needless to say, the terrain didn’t make for a
smooth ride and we would have loved to race our cars at these Build & Test ramps instead!”
Clint gave us some top tips on how to increase the speed of your LEGO® race car:
1. Make it heavy! If you are building for a downhill race, add plenty of LEGO® bricks to gain more speed!
2. Make sure that your tires don’t rub against the side of your car!
3. Larger LEGO® wheels are generally faster than smaller LEGO® wheels.
4. If you can, use Technic axles and wheels instead of the clip-on wheels, they are faster!
5. Build your car low to the ground for better aerodynamics and a lower chance of it tipping over.
6. Put a good amount of distance between your front and back wheels to lessen the chance that it will swerve and crash.
7. Don’t add extra wheels — four is plenty. Adding more wheels increases the rolling resistance of your car and slows it down!
8. Use fenders (covers over the tires) or a wide bumper on the front. That way, if your car bumps into anything, it might keep on rolling!
9. Add flames or a rocket engine to your car. It won’t really make it faster, but it will look awesome!
