Clarkston Maple Syrup and Tree Tapping:

Maple Magic- Saturday, March 2, 2019- 1-3 p.m.

Maple syrup is an icon of our region around the world. Learn to identify maple trees, take a hike to tap a tree and taste the sap. We will teach you the tools, tips and methods needed to make your own batch of maple syrup at home. Taste sweet maple treats by a campfire and take home maple-based recipes. $5/person. Come to the library for a sweet program about maple sugaring season with Charlie Shelton from Huron-Clinton Metroparks.


Oakland Maple Syrup and Tree Tapping:

Monster Maples- Sunday, March 17, 2019- 1-2:15 p.m. and 2:30-3:45 p.m.

Cranberry Lake Park- 384 West Predmore Road, 388 West Predmore Road, Oakland Township, MI 

Michigan is one of the few places in the world where the conditions are just right for the collection of sap from maple trees. In this program we explore this history and techniques of tapping maple trees to collect sap which is turned into maple syrup. Indoors we will learn important tips such as how to identify a maple tree and how many taps can be placed in one tree. Outdoors we will actually practice tapping trees and even take a taste of sap as it flows (depending on weather conditions). Inside we will taste maple syrup and an authentic Native American recipe. Each family will even receive a spile to take home to practice what we learned at Cranberry Lake!Pre-register.  This event is sure to sell out!

Rochester & Rochester Hills Maple Syrup and Tree Tapping:


Rochester Hills Makes Maple Syrup-  Saturday, February 23, 2019- 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Bloomer Park- 345 John R. Road, Rochester Hills, MI
Families will be able to join our outdoor engagement team to learn how to make their own maple syrup. Participants will learn how to identify different species of maple trees, the tree tapping process, and how to set up sap boiling. Participants will also go home with their own spile, tubing, and bucket. This program is held rain or shine so come dressed for the weather and a walk through the woods. The cost is $12 per person. Spaces fill up quickly, so sign up to secure your spot for this unique experience. Maple sugaring season is one of our favorite times of year at Dinosaur Hill.  This program focuses on the sweeter side of maple sugaring and will also include a tapping demonstration. We’ll find out how sap goes from tree to syrup to candy...yum. We will have sweet treats to sample too of course!  Non-Members:  $5 per person including adults with a family maximum of $20.  Members:  $3 per person including adults with a family maximum of $12

Visit the Museum at Van Hoosen Farm to see an old-fashioned sap-to-syrup boiling operation. We will be making syrup from trees tapped right here in Rochester Hills. Sample some real maple syrup and enjoy a pancake breakfast complete with sausage, juice and coffee. Tickets are split into three sessions, 9am, 10am and 11am. Troy Maple Syrup and Tree Tapping:

Learn how maple syrup was harvested and processed 150 years ago compared to today. We will explore how sap is used around the world to make medicine, beverages, rubber and more. Visitors will observe the collection of sap, watch as it's boiled down and drawn off intomaple syrup inside our sugar shed using a modern-day wood-stoked evaporator.
