3 Ways to Teach Kids about Charity

How to Teach Kids to Help Those in Need

April 1, 2019

Donate: A simple way to teach kids about donating are to go through their old toys and clothes with them. Decide together what items they have outgrown, and the benefits of donating them instead of throwing them away.

“Giving” crafts: A shopping trip to the dollar store is an easy way to get kids excited. You can choose a number of items to purchase, like toothbrushes, toothpaste, towels, soap, nail clippers, and combs to put together hygiene kits for local charity groups. This will be a fun learning activity for children, and it won’t break the bank!

Read books together: A few good examples of books that can teach lessons about giving to others are The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen by DyAnne DiSalvo-Ryan, and The Giving Book by Ellen Sabin. You and your little ones can read these books together and discuss the concept of giving afterwards. This is a good way to get insight into their minds and understand how they interpret the meaning.
