*Statement from Oxford Fire Chief Matthew Majestic:

“After great deliberation and communication with the parties involved, I regret to inform everyone that the fireworks scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Seymour Celebration have been postponed.

“The fireworks were postponed due to the current dry conditions and warm temperatures. No rain is predicted in the near future. Currently, our area is rated as being between Extreme and Exceptional Drought (the two highest levels of drought), according to the U.S Drought Monitor and the Michigan DNR. We felt it was unsafe and posed a high risk of fire if we chose to go forward with the fireworks at this time. The Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department will be working to reschedule the fireworks for a later date.

“Additionally, the fire department has shut down the burn permit system and is not allowing any form of open burning due to these same drought conditions.”

Parks and Recreation Director Phil Castonia wants to assure the public that the rest of Seymour Celebration (June 8-11) will proceed as planned. “There will still be four days of fantastic carnival rides and games, plus a wonderful classic car cruise on Thursday and plenty of live music on Friday and Saturday nights,” he said. “Please come and join us for some good old-fashioned summer fun!”
