Earth Day, Arbor Day and Green + Healthy Living Events 2018

Earth Day is officially on Sunday, April 22, but several eco-minded events are scheduled as soon as this week to celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day, green and healthy living and to pay homage to our beautiful planet.

3rd Annual Orion Green-Up

Where: Camp Agawam, 1301 Clarkston Road, Lake Orion
When: Saturday, April 14 at 8 am

Celebrate Earth Day while making Lake Orion a greener, cleaner place to live and play...and have some fun doing it! Whether you’re by yourself or with a group, the 3rd annual Orion Green-Up is the perfect opportunity for you to make a difference in your community. 

  • Check-in at Camp Agawam from 8-9 am to receive projects.
  • Lunch will be served at noon
  • Trash bags will be provided
  • Please bring gloves, rakes, shovels, or anything else that may help you make Orion greener


GreenFest

Where: Detroit Zoo, 8450 W. Ten Mile Rd., Royal Oak
When: Saturday, April 14 from 10 am - 3 pm
Cost: FREE with paid Zoo admission. 

This pre-Earth Day celebration will feature a sustainability tour to learn more about our anaerobic digester, educational rain gardens, farm-to-table food options, composting program and other initiatives as part of our Green Journey. Activities will include chemistry demonstrations, zookeeper talks and more. Additionally, a 16-foot ground-mounted solar system called the smartflower™ will be featured blooming in the garden just east of the Carousel. The system is expected to generate more than 4,000 kilowatts of electricity annually, which is enough to power the 36-foot ride as well as other areas of the Zoo.

GreenFest is an initiative of the Detroit Zoological Society’s Greenprint, a comprehensive strategic plan to refine and improve facilities and daily practices, develop new policies and programs and improve green literacy in the community.


Teen Tuesday! Earth Day Crafts

Where: Clarkston Independence District Library
When: Tuesday, April 17 from 6 - 7 pm

Earth Day is just around the corner so let's make some sustainable crafts! CIDL's monthly teen events are created by teens for teens! (Registration is required)


6th Annual Body Mind Green Expo

Where: Clarkston High School, 6093 Flemings Lake Road, Clarkston
When: Thursday, April 19th from 4 - 7 pm
Cost: FREE

Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting it's 6th annual Body Mind Green Expo featuring local businesses dedicated to health, wellness and the environment on Thursday, April 19, from 4-7 pm in Clarkston High School's cafeteria. Admission is free and open to the community!

Live demonstrations will include water quality and preservation by Rainforest Café, cooking demos from HAP, and a presentation from Clarkston for Life about community resources for physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and Independence Township Fire Department will also be on-site for a meet and greet.

The Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce partnered with HAP and Carrot Wellness to bring the Clarkston Community Health Challenge. Download the “Carrot Wellness” app and join the #StepItUpClarkston tab. Prizes include a three-month membership to Anytime Fitness, White Lake Commons; three Cryro Sessions at Clarkston Chiropractic Sports and Wellness; full car detail provided by Bowman Chevrolet; and over $500 in other prizes. Winners will be announced at the Body, Mind, Green Expo at 4:30 p.m. Come out to enjoy a night of healthy living right here in Clarkston!


MI Earth Day Fest

Where: Downtown Rochester, Third and Water Streets
When: Friday, April 20: 4 - 8 pm, Saturday, April 21: 10 am - 6 pm, Sunday, April 22: 10 am - 4 pm
Cost: FREE admission & activities

The MI Earth Day Fest is one of the planet's largest and liveliest Earth Day celebrations! This high-profile community event highlights the efforts of area businesses and community organizations to Make Earth Day Matter.

The three-day festival offers a wide variety of exhibits, attractions and activities with free admission thanks to generous sponsors.

They craft, you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy making a craft themed around Earth Day. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth Storytime

Where: Barnes & Noble, 2800 S. Rochester Rd. Rochester Hills

Make a Miniature Rainforest!

Where: Rochester Hills Public Library
When: Saturday, April 21 from 2 pm - 4 pm
**Children in grades K - 5** Registration begins 4/14/2018 at 9 am

In honor of Earth Day, join the RHPL for an upcycling, planting extravaganza! You'll be using discarded soda bottles to create miniature terrariums. All materials will be provided. Feel free to bring in gardening gloves. Who doesn't love to play in the dirt!


TriceraTots Puppet Theatre: The Story of Earth Day

Where: Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve, 333 North Hill Circle, Rochester Hills
When: Sunday, April 22 from 10:30 am - 12 pm
Cost: $5 per child non-member, $3 per child member. Adults are FREE. Advance registration required. 

There’s no better place to spend Earth Day than a nature center and no better person to help teach you about recycling than Relish the Raccoon. Children will enjoy putting together their own crazy recycled earth day art project and then go out and enjoy the sight, sounds and smells.


Kids Seed Craft + Earth Day Giveaway!

Where: Fresh Thyme Farmers Market
When: Sunday, April 22 from 12 - 3 pm
Cost: FREE

What better way to celebrate the Earth than by playing in the dirt?! Fresh Thyme will be hosting an Earth Day inspired kids activity by planting fast growing seeds in soil for kids to take home and grow. While you’re there, be sure to stop by their giveaway table for a chance to win a basket full of natural cleaning and other environmentally-friendly products.


Auburn Hills' Arbor Day Celebration

Where: Rogers Elementary School, 2600 Dexter Rd. Auburn Hills
When: Friday, April 27th at 2 pm

Join fellow neighbors & City Officials celebrating across America on this day as a symbolic tree in planted recognition of the City of Auburn Hills' 18th Annual Arbor Day. You will also receive valuable information on how to properly care for trees.


Rochester Hills' Arbor Day Ceremony

Where: Meadow Brook Hall, 350 Estate Drive, Rochester
When: Friday, April 27 at 3:30 pm

On the last Friday in April (Arbor Day), the Forestry Division conducts an annual tree-planting ceremony with the Mayor presiding and often a local scouting or youth group in attendance. Different sites are selected each year for the Arbor Day tree; Borden, Spencer, and Avondale Parks, and City Hall grounds have all been chosen in the past. This year’s tree planting ceremony commemorating Arbor Day will be held on April 27th at 3:30 pm at Meadow Brook Hall.
